Man walks into police station with IRS scammer on the phone
ABC2 News - 3/21/2017 - FOX CROSSING, Wis. (WBAY) - Scammers don't give up. Fox Crossing police say a man came into the police department Tuesday morning with a scammer still on the phone with him, trying to get more than $9,000 from him.
The caller said he was from the IRS and the man owed more than $9,000 in taxes and he had to pay up or he'd be arrested.
And he believed it, too. He went to Target at Fox River Mall to put the money on a prepaid debit card, but an employee there was suspicious and stopped him from making the purchasing, warning him it was probably a scam. But the bogus IRS agent didn't give up. He directed the man to go to another store. Now the man was wise to the scheme, and instead of driving to the next store he drove to the Fox Crossing police department. Police say once the man told the scammer he was at the police station the scammer hung up. And then called back. This time the phone number was "spoofed" to say it was coming from the Neenah Police Department. The caller claimed to be Officer Andy Gibson and threatened the victim with arrest.
