Odometer Fraud Is Still On Law Enforcement Radar
Forbes - 2/28/2017 - Jim Henry - Odometer fraud seems like an old-fashioned crime from before the digital odometer, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates odometer fraud still cheats U.S. consumers out of $1 billion annually by exaggerating the value of used cars. Last week, the U.S. Department of Justice announced a Georgia man who operated a repair shop that also sold salvaged vehicles pleaded guilty to an odometer fraud scheme involving over 100 vehicles. Paul Robinson, 37, of Lawrenceville, Ga., pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Norfolk, Va., to one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud and odometer tampering, the DOJ said.
