Forbes - Nikki Baird - I don’t think consumers realize how vulnerable their privacy is when they provide data to retailers. For the most part, many seem to feel like, “I have nothing to hide so I don’t really care.” That would all be well and good if someone else was looking out for them, but in the retail technology world, where a lot of this data collection happens, retailers and the solution providers who enable them act more like two ships passing in the night. Retailers say, “I’m relying on the technology vendor to protect customer data.” And vendors say, “We collect everything, but we rely on the retailer to tell us what we should keep, what we should protect, and what retailers will ultimately use.” Each says they are relying on the other to keep consumers safe, which means no one is.
